Summer means saying goodbye to thick sweaters and dark tights. It’s all about light and airy fashion to keep you looking cool. With a few key accessories and chic wardrobe staples, you will be able to mix and match your way through the hot months.
Since you will likely spend more time outside, a new, fashionable pair of sunglasses is a must. “A great pair of sunglasses are essential for summer wherever you live,” said stylist Aya Kanai. Sunglasses not only protect the eyes, but they come in enough different shapes, patterns and colors to add great style to any outfit.
Kanai particularly loves the Deep Freeze Fluro Orange by Karen Walker Eyewear because, she says, they have character and are comfortable to wear all day long. Choose colorful sunglasses that will complement your wardrobe. And, always select sunglasses that fit your face shape.
Oversized Men’s Watches
Summer is all about flirty dresses and flowery skirts. To break up all that femininity, add an oversized men’s watch to your accessory collection.
“An oversized man’s watch can add just that little bit of street cred and toughness to an other wise girly look,” said Clare Mukherjee, a stylist whose clients include Alexis Bledel, Emilie De Ravin and Rachelle LeFevre. “Think floral minidress, brogues and the men’s watch. It’s boy meets girl chic.”
Mukherjee also said the oversized watches also make a woman’s wrists “look slim and slender.” In a dream world, the perfect watch would be a vintage Rolex, but Mukherjee said, Citizen or Marc by Marc Jacobs have to-die-for interpretations.
A Stylish, Comfortable Shoe
Nothing feels better than running barefoot on the beach. However, for the city girls and everyone else hitting their heels hard on the pavement, the next best things are comfortable and stylish summer shoes. Even with such a dreadful name, the clog is a definite summer must-have.
“These sandals are perfect for warm weather,” said Kanai, who has held positions at “Teen Vogue” and “Nylon” magazines. “Somehow, the wooden footbed is comfortable and keeps you cool.”
One of her favorites is the three-strap clog by No. 6. The clog can also be worn well into fall and even winter, which makes clogs a great investment.
Sky-high wedges and heels are gorgeous, but not the most comfortable walking-around option. The experts say the best option for height and style is a flatform shoe.
“They are incredibly comfortable and a great alternative to wedges,” Mukherjee said. “The flatform is the new go-to for fashion forward women.”
Mukherjee said flatforms like her favorites from Vena Cava are great to pair with summer dresses or denim cut-offs.
Summer may seem like the time to show off your gams, but long hemlines are very trendy and flatter many women.
“When jean shorts get boring and miniskirts are inappropriate, the maxiskirt is always a demure and beautiful addition to the wardrobe,” Kanai said, adding that printed maxiskirts from Tucker by Gaby Basora can add drama to any summer outfit.
Stylist Rebecca Koenig agrees that the maxiskirt is a perfect way to be effortlessly chic. She also suggests them as a simple fun alternative.
“The new sheer twist adds an extra hint of allure to the trend,” said Koenig, who has worked with Blake Lively, Maria Menounos and Elle Macpherson, “They can easily transition from day to night.”
Tail hems, where the skirts and dresses are cut longer in the back, are one more stylish variation of this trend and can be worn during the day or night.
“They fill the void between mini and midi or midi and maxi,” Koenig said. “They cover yet expose. It’s a simple way to freshen your wardrobe with a new type of hem.
The White Blazer
White blazers stand out summer season after season because they last. One new, crisp, white blazer will get you through the summer, but it’s also a timeless summer wardrobe staple.
“During the day, wear with your white blazer with skinny pants and flats,” Mukherjee said. “At night, throw one over your black minidress, add some sky-high heels and you are set.”
