All-State Athletes who are also excellent students may qualify for specific scholarships in addition to federal and state funding available through grants and student aid. Scholarships are available for athlete scholars from the level of high school senior through graduate school. Some scholarships require applications and some require nominations. Eligibility criteria varies with the different awards.
State Farm Texas Scholar Athlete Program
The State Farm Texas Scholar Athlete Program awards scholarships to high school seniors throughout Texas who are exceptional athletes and also maintain high grades. Other criteria for the award includes leadership skills, participation in extracurricular activities and community involvement. Students must be nominated for this award by their high school coaches, teachers, counselors or administrators. Students nominated for this award must compete at the varsity level in a University Interscholastic League (UIL) sport while in high school and must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) upon high school graduation. Awards are made in cash to students to use as desired to further academic goals. Athletes are encouraged to talk to their counselors and coaches to work toward nominations for this award.
Texas State University Scholar Athletes Scholarships
Texas State University (TSU) at San Marcos has several athletic scholarships for both men and women. Students must submit a scholarship application form in addition to the FAFSA to be considered for scholarships from this institution. The scholarship application is available in PDF format online or can be mailed to students by contacting the financial aid office on campus. Students must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in addition to the scholarship application to be considered for scholarships, even if they are ineligible for federal aid. TSU also has scholarships available for students who would like to enter the careers of athletic training or recreation administration.
The Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship
The University of Texas (UT) offers the Big 12 Conference Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship to UT athletes. A committee of faculty athletics representatives select the recipients of these postgraduate scholarship awards. A minimum GPA of 3.5 and two years’ participation in the UT intercollegiate athletics program are required. Recipients must graduate within 15 months of being selected for the awards and the scholarship is to be used to enroll in graduate or professional school within two years of receiving an undergraduate degree. Other financial aid, such as grants and scholarships, are available at UT to assist scholar athletes, including the Federal Pell Grant. Students must file a FAFSA online to be considered for financial aid at UT.
NCAA Athlete Scholarships
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Postgraduate Scholarship awards the NCAA’s top NCAA championship and/or emerging sports academic athletes. Other criteria for this award include campus activities, community service, volunteerism and leadership. Awards are made regardless of sport, division, gender or race. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually. The scholarships are awarded to excellent student-athletes who are in their last year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants and students must be nominated by the NCAA to receive these awards.
